Melissa Helquist Wins Funds for Freedom Writers
Melissa Helquist, Ph.D. student in Technical Communication, was awarded $600 in funding from the Utah Humanities Council for the Salt Lake Community Center's Community Writing Center to support a Freedom Writers anthology and reading on Martin Luther King Day 2012.
The CWC’s Freedom Writers project is part of a larger effort coordinated by KUED to explore civil rights and the Freedom Riders through film, photography, curriculum, and writing. Contributions to the Freedom Writers project were collected from five public workshops at the Community Writing Center, Homeless Youth Resource Center, Hartland University Neighborhood Partners, Utah Independent Living Center, and Brigham City’s Dale Young Community High School Youth in Custody Program. The purpose of the project is to offer the Salt Lake community a unique opportunity to explore the history of civil rights through the contemporary perspectives and experiences of their neighbors.
The funding proposal was originally written in Dr. Angela Eaton's Fall 2011 ENGL 5383: Grants and Proposals.
