Start the next chapter of your writing career.
Our creative writing M.A. and Ph.D. programs offer students with exceptional ability and potential the chance to concentrate on their art and the rigorous academic study of literature. This powerful combination opens doors for many academic opportunities not available to typical M.F.A. graduates.
As a student you will balance creative and scholarly interests, participate in small, intensive workshops and literature seminars, and produce both creative and scholarly work. In your creative work, particularly, you will be encouraged to develop your writing skills in two genres so that you will be prepared to teach more than one.

Find out about our award-winning faculty and outstanding students.
The faculty in Creative Writing are working writers with numerous publications and awards, and they are distinguished mentors and teachers who work closely with graduate students to help them meet their goals and aspirations. Because of this dedication and the very hard work of the students themselves, the graduate students in our program have published work in Black Review, Carolina Quarterly, Indiana Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, Missouri Review, Ontario Review, Passages North, Poetry, Ploughshares, Prairie Schooner, and TriQuarterly, among other venues.
Former students have also published books with presses like Brickhouse Books, New York University Press, Ontario Review Press, Parallel Press, Northeastern University Press, and Wings Press.
We also host an outstanding series of visiting writers each year who come to host workshops and read from their work. B. H. Fairchild, Larrry McMurtry, Pam Houston, and Percival Everett have all visited Texas Tech. For a complete list of visiting writers, see the link above right.
What are you waiting for?
- 90% of our M.A. and Ph.D students receive assistantship support.
- Our students come from SUNY Stonybrook, UC-Riverside, the University of Illinois, and all points between.
- We host an expense-paid Recruitment Weekend each March for students admitted to our program. So apply, get admitted, and then come see what we have to offer.
