Writing Prizes
The Department of English awards several writing prizes each year, one for scholarly writing and three others for creative work. Graduate students in English also compete regularly (and effectively) each year for writing prizes meant to support thesis and/or dissertation research.
The writing prizes awarded by the Department of English include:
- The Warren S. Walker Award for Critical Writing, which recognizes the best essay written in an organized graduate course in English during the prior calendar year.
- The Robert S. Newton Awards in Creative Writing (one in Fiction, one in Poetry), for the authors of the best pieces of fiction and poetry written in creative writing workshops during the prior calendar year.
- The Creative Writing Award in Non-fiction, given each year to the student who has composed the best piece of creative non-fiction in a creative writing workshop during the prior calendar year.
