There are a number of professors in the Department of English whose backgrounds include training in the English language, linguistics and closely related areas. Core faculty with tenure-stream appointments in linguistics in our department are Drs. Hurst and Kim.

- Guy Bailey (PhD, University of Tennessee). President. Areas include English linguistics, language variation and change, with special emphasis on the English of Texas and the American South, and in computational linguistics.
- Mary Jane Hurst (PhD, University of Maryland) Professor. Areas include linguistics and language in literature, language and gender, sociolinguistics
- Min-Joo Kim (PhD, University of Massachusetts, Amherst) Associate Professor. Areas include semantics, syntax, and their interface; formal pragmatics and language acquisition
